Laford Massengale, 91, of Pioneer, died Thursday morning, March 25, 1999, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.Mr. Massengale was born in Scott County on July 6, 1907, the son of Franklin and Mary Jane Massengale.
He had been a member and deacon of River View Missionary Baptist Church
at Smokey Junction since November 1941.Mr. Massengale is survived by six daughters, Delsie Chambers and her husband, Earl, of Straight Fork, Tenn., Rosie Jane Cook, Hazel Massengale and Aneda Thrasher, all of Oak Ridge, Macil Murrell and her husband, Larry, of Seymour, and Murtle Midge Carson and her husband, William, of Clinton; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Jean Massengale of Petros.He is also survived by three sisters, Celia Cross, Locie Hembree and Linda Lowe, all of the Smokey Junction area; two sisters-in-law, Mertie Anderson and Martha Brannim; 10 grandchildren, Starlet, Pamela, Keith, Mark, Debbie, Ellen,Crystal, Billy, Eric and James; 19 great-grandchildren; nine
great-great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.His wife, Birdie Ellen Massengale, died earlier. A son, Clifford Massengale,three infant children, a grandson, Rickie Chambers, four brothers, Esau Massengale, Levie Massengale, Elmer Massengale and McKinley Massengale,and five sisters, Elizabeth Cross, Sylvania Harness, Louella Bunch, Dora Carroll and Vianna Carroll, are also deceased.The funeral was held Saturday, March 27, at River View Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Massengale and the Rev. Tom Owens officiating.Burial followed at Smokey Junction Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Lowe,Clem Lowe, Kern Lowe, Curtis Massengale, Gary Massengale, Clarence Carroll, Kenneth Lowe and Dillard Massengale. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Massengale, Brian Massengale, Mark Massengale, Billy Carson, Eric Carson, James Thrasher, Richie Chambers and Jimmy Crowley.West Murley Funeral Home in Oneida handled arrangements.
