Jemima Armstrong, daughter of Mary Ann (née Ward) and James A. Armstrong, was born in Longtown, Arthuret Parish, Cumberland, England. Along with her parents and siblings, she immigrated to the United States, arriving on 23 May 1870 in New York on the S. S. Europa. The Armstrong family settled quickly on a farm in Bellflower Township, McLean County, Illinois. Jemima was 12 when er father died in 1877. Her mother remarried the following year. Jemima in 1880 was not enumerated in her mother and step-father's household, and may have been employed as a domestic, as were two of her sisters.

In 1885, Jemima Armstrong was living with her mother and step-father John Nichol in Seward County, Nebraska. Miss "Jemimah" Armstrong and Charles R. Hite were married on 31 December 1890 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. The bride, age 24, was the daughter of James Armstrong and Mary A. Ward; the groom, age 29, the son of Eli Hite and Lizzie Runner. The couple had two daughters: Ethel Bell and Hazel Adele.

Jemima and Charles Hite were enumerated from 1900 through 1930 in Gage County, Nebraska. He died in 1931. Jemima was enumerated in 1940 with her daughter Hazel and her family in Lincoln, Nebraska.
