Mary Irving Armstrong was the eldest child of Mary Ann (née Ward) and James Armstrong, born in Nichol Forest, Kirkandrews-on-Esk Parish, then in Cumberland, England. The Armstrong family—parents and seven children—immigrated to the United States, arriving on 23 May 1870 in New York on board the S. S. Europa. The family continued on to Illinois, where they were enumerated later that year in Bellflower Township, McLean County, with James Armstrong farming his land worth $1,200. Mary Armstrong's father died in 1877, when she was 18. Her mother remarried the following year. In 1880, Mary Armstrong, age 21, was employed as a domestic in neighboring Brown Township, Champaign County, Illinois.

Miss Mary "E." Armstrong and Mr. "Manuel P." Painter were married on 13 February 1881 Brown Township. Both were township residents, and moved to a farm in the township north of Foosland, where they lived for five years, and then moved a farm adjoining Foosland.

The couple were the parents of seven children, all born in or near Foosland. One son died at birth; one son died in childhood.

Emanuel Painter continued to farm until retiring in 1918. After his death in 1920, Mary Painter continued to reside in Foosland with her younger daughter Geneva Hanson until this daughter's death in 1956. Afterwards, she lived with her elder daughter Carrie Smith a few miles away in Bellflower, McLean County, and died there in 1957, a few days before her 98th birthday. Mary Painter was survived also by her youngest son, Earl, and by 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Granddaughter Verla Bullard (née Painter) recalled: "My paternal grandmother, who was born in Scotland, resided in the same town as us. She was a statuesque lady with waist long snow-white hair, a very wise and proud lady. We never seemed real close to her, although she was always kind to us." *

Notes

The former Miss Mary Irving Armstrong was born along the Anglo-Scottish border—on the English side—yet she claimed to have been born in Scotland, and regarded herself as being Scottish. This particular area had once been within the Debatable Lands, controlled by local clans, including the Armstrongs, who resisted both English and Scottish authority.
