Mary Ann Ward was born on 3 February 1837 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England.*

Mary Ann Ward and James Armstrong were married in the mid- or late 1850s, possibly in Cumberland. With her husband and (then) seven children, she immigrated to the United States, arriving on 23 May 1870 on the S. S. Europa in New York. Later that year, the family was enumerated in Bellflower Township, McLean County, Illinois, where James Armstrong was a farmer on his land worth $1,200.

After her husband James's death in 1877, Mary Ann Armstrong married John Nichol, a Scottish-born farmer, in McLean County. The couple had a daughter, Anna, and in 1883 moved to Nebraska. John Nichol went missing in the early 1890s and was presumed dead.

Mary A. Nichols was enumerated in 1900 and 1910 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, and died there in 1913 at the age of 76. She was survived by six of her ten children.
