Lyle J. Woodbeck, 83, of Hayward, died Nov. 20 at St. Mary’s medical Center in Duluth.

Lyle “Woody” Joseph Woodbeck was born May 27, 1918 in Hayward, the son of George and Grace (Ewing) Woodbeck. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1938. He was a member of the varsity basketball team, which went undefeated in his senior year. He was joined in marriage to Carolyn Sletten of Chetek on March 16, 1941. He worked as a butcher for 23 years at the Hayward Northern Lakes Co-op and retired in 1983. He was a member of the First Lutheran church in Hayward and the Hayward Golf and Tennis club for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, one daughter, Linda (Cal) Gordon, Hayward; one son, Charles (Sandie) Woodbeck, Monkton, Md., four grandchildren, Scott Gordon, Susan (Stacy) Aaker, Jill (Larry) Hinson and Benjamin Woodbeck; two great grandchildren, Cole Gordon and Emma Sandra Hinson; four sisters, Emily Beal, June (Evert) Wetterling, Jean Rang and Charlotte Miles; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Vernon, Edward, James, Willard, and Lou Allen; three sisters, Betty Woodbeck, Helen Koerner and Lyda Wetzel.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26 at First Lutheran Church in Hayward with Pastor Carl Bruihler officiating. Music was provided by Scott Gordon and Karen Peters. A visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Scott Gordon, Rollie Lemke, George McKee, Jack Moreland, Ben Woodbeck and Bob Woodbeck.

Memorials may be directed to the Sunshine Club, which assists families with an Alzheimer’s or dementia patient, at the Senior Resource Center Sunshine Club, c/o Nancy Gustafson, P.O.B. 1014, Hayward, WI 54843.

The Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
