Born Durham England to Joseph T and Rebecca (Unknown) Thompson. Began working at a young age in the Durham coal mines. 1st marriage in Durham resulted in a child, nothing is know of either of them. 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Esther Bence. Father of Rebecca, William, Joseph, John, Elizabeth, Alice, Margaret, and Ester. 3rd marriage to Cora Mae Pirtle. Father of Jettie, George, John, Robert, and Aline. Stepfather to Annie and Molly Sturdevant. Immigrated to the US approx 1879. In addition to working as a coal miner he was also a Baptist preacher, hatter, Justice of the Peace, and farmer.
