Helmi was the youngest child of Maija (Koukkari) and Matti 'Matt' Anttila Syrjälä Koskela of Alajärvi, Finland. Helmi, her mother, and 5 siblings immigrated to America arriving on October, 4, 1887 aboard the ship "Werra" when Helmi was 4 years old. Her father and eldest brother, Gust, had arrived in America previously to work in the mines. The family spent about a year in Carbon, Wyoming, then went to the Pendleton, Oregon area for several years where they farmed. The family then went by wagon train with several other Finnish families from the Pendleton area to Long Valley, Idaho, arriving in 1896 when she was 14 years old. Helmi and her sisters helped work this homestead ranch, including running horse teams and plowing. She married Ira Blankinship of Long Valley on Dec 22, 1901 at Van Wyck when she was 19. She died in 1904 at age 22. She is interred at the Koskela homestead cemetery along with her parents.
