"Tilda" (or "Tillie") was born at Alajarvi, Finland, the daughter of Maija Sanna Koukkari and Matti Anttila-Syrjälä Koskela. Her name at baptism was Sanna Mathilda Koskela. She came to America with her mother and 5 siblings on Oct 4, 1887 on the ship "Werra" when she was five years old. Her father and oldest brother had arrived previously and worked in the mines of Carbon, Wyoming. Tillie and her family spent some time at Carbon, then the Pendleton, Oregon area. They then went by wagon train to Long Valley, Idaho, arriving there in November 1895. She and her family were amongst the earliest European settlers in the Valley. The family homesteaded southeast of Donnelly. She married Jacob 'Jack' Kantola at Roseberry on June 12, 1903. Rev. John W. Eloheimo officiated. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Donnelly. She died at a Cascade hospital facility following an extended illness. She was 81 years old. She is survived by all of her children: seven sons, Edward of Walla Walla, Jack and Alvin, both of Donnelly, Albert of Clarkston, WA, Walter of Longview, WA, John of Oroville, CA, and Wayne Kantola of Roseville, CA; and three daughters: Miss Mildred Kantola of Marysville, WA, Mrs. Mary Ragains of Emmett and Mrs. Aila Good of Donnelly. Her husband died in 1953. [Obituary excerpts from Star News, Cascade Idaho, April 27, 1962]
