Elias was born in Alajärvi, Finland. He and his mother, Maija, and 5 of his siblings arrived in New York on the ship "Werra" on Oct. 4, 1887 when Eli was 8 years old. His father, Matt and oldest brother Gust had arrived about 4 years earlier and were working in the mines of Carbon, Wyoming. The family reunited there, and went first to the Pendleton, Oregon area for several years and farmed. They then went by wagon train with several other Finnish families to Long Valley, Idaho, arriving there in 1896. He and his family were among the first European settlers in the Valley. They homesteaded land southeast of Donnelly. Eli married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hendrikson, also a Finnish immigrant, in 1900 at Silver Bow, Montana, where he was a copper miner. The couple had 3 sons there: Howard, Arthur, and Theodore. He and his wife then moved to Long Valley, Idaho, where his parents and other family members lived. They farmed in the McCall/Van Wyck area. His marriage to Lizzie ended sometime after 1920. On Nov 22, 1930 he married Anna E. Hartman in Boise when he was 52. He died 8 years later at age 59. He was survived by his wife Anna, and brothers Gust Koskela of Long Valley and Matt Costella (his name change) of Corral, Idaho, and sisters Hilda Lahti and Mathilda "Tillie" Kantola of Long Valley.
[Note: Church Records of Vimpeli Lutheran Church, Vimpeli, Finland show his birth year was 1876. Grave marker shows 1878. Thank you to Heikki Tapani Salmela of Oulu, Finland and Charlotte Grace (Lake) Oglevie for their research]
