Maija ("Mary"), 76, passed away at Fairfield, Camas County, Idaho at the home of her son, Matt Costella (ne Koskela). She was born at Lappajärvi, Finland, the daughter of Maija (Rautilla) and Jaakko Lamminkoski Koukkari.

She married Matti Anttila Syrjälä-Koskela in 1867 in the Lutheran Church at Alajärvi, Finland. The couple had 9 children in the years 1868-1882, all born at Alajärvi. They were: Juha Gustaf ('Gust'), twin sons Matts and Elias, who died in infancy; Hilda Wilhelmiina, Anna Maria, Matti William, Elias Edward, Sanna Mathilda ('Tillie'), and Helmi Emeliia ('Pearl').

In 1883, her eldest son Gust, and possibly her husband immigrated to America where they worked first in the copper mines of Michigan, then the mines of Carbon, Wyoming.

Maija and the 6 younger children arrived in America later, arriving on the ship "Werra" in New York on Oct 4, 1887.

The family probably reunited at Carbon, Wyoming, where they stayed another year before going to the Pendleton, Oregon area. They farmed there until the US financial crash of 1893-1897, when they lost their land and went with several other Finnish families from the Pendleton area to Long Valley, Idaho in 1895. The trip there on horseback and wagon took several weeks and they arrived at Long Valley in the fall of 1895.

The Koskelas were among the first European settlers in the Valley and homesteaded land southeast of the current town of Roseberry. In the 1900 US census at Long Valley, she is shown as mother of 13 children, 6 who are surviving at that date.

In 1919 at her death, Maija was survived by 5 of her children: sons Gustaf of Long Valley; Matti ('Matt') Costella of Fairfield; Elias Koskela of McCall, and daughters Hilda Lahti and Tillie Kantola of Long Valley, and several grand children. Her husband, Matti and daughters Helmi Emeliia ('Pearl') and Anna Maria preceded her in death.
