Jim Hamby was born in Decatur, Alabama and was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Birmingham where he was lay leader and Sunday School teacher, as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was former catcher for the Birmingham Barons Baseball Team in the 1930's.

He was the son of Rev. Charles Pinkney Hamby and his first wife, Zadie Allen Hamby. Jim married Georgie Francis Smith. A copy of the original obituary is attached to this memorial.
