Laura Willie Hamby Shelton ("Willie") was the oldest daughter of Rev. C.P. Hamby, Sr. and his first wife, Zadie Allen Hamby.

She was born in Wesson, Mississippi and as a child her family moved to Cottondale, Alabama near Tuscaloosa. Her father was a weaver in a cotton mill as a young man before he became a Methodist preacher. She continued to grow up in Fayette, Alabama before locating permanently in Pulaski, Tennessee with her husband John Henry Shelton.

She was the oldest of seven siblings and five additional half-siblings, born of Charlie Hamby's second wife was Louie Ann Williams Hamby.

The children of John Henry Shelton and Laura Willie Hamby Shelton were Charles, Morris, Anna, Sara, and Carolyn Shelton.
