Betty Jean Hamby West was the daughter of Rev. Charles Pinkney Hamby, Sr. and Louie Ann Williams Hamby of Bridgeport, Alabama. Her parents met when he was preaching a revival in Bridgeport and she was in the congregation. Betty is buried near her mother and sister, Dorothy Hamby Cartledge, in Elmwood cemetery. Her father is buried in another section of the graveyard with his first wife, Zadie Allen Hamby.

Betty was the daughter, niece, sister, wife, mother, and mother-in-law of Methodist preachers in North Alabama and she is a 6th generation Methodist descended from Taylor circuit riders. She married Rev. John Pierce "Pete" West, Jr. and lived her life in parsonages.

Upon becoming an empty nester, Betty went back to her love of teaching High School English. She was an AP (Advanced Placement) English teacher with a Master's Degree before she retired from teaching.

She was a very popular and engaging speaker, was active in United Methodist Women and Emmaus, and taught Sunday School for 50 years. She started a Sunday School class in every church they served. In retirement, she taught Sunday School in the church her son served as founding pastor. She loved the holidays and family reunions and was the glue that kept the West and Hamby families strong.

She had four children:
John Charles West (b. 1956)
David Andrew West (b. 1959)
Stephen Pierce West (b. 1965)
Richmond Pierce West (b. 1969)

She was the youngest of a large family. Her siblings were Dorothy Eleanor Hamby, Marvin Haynes Hamby, Rev. Warren Candler Hamby, Sr., and Rev. Charles Pinkney Hamby, Jr. Her half-siblings were Laura Willie Hamby, Jettie F. Hamby, John Foust Hamby, Henry Gatline Hamby, Richmond Pearson Hamby, Ruth Meriam Hamby, and James Earle Hamby.
