Agnes Ella Shackley grew up on her parent's homestead in Merino CO. When the family moved to Arvada in 1920, she at the age of 16 along with her two siblings, one older and one younger, moved where she graduated from Arvada High School. Upon graduation, it is assumed that she returned to the area where she was raised and started to teach school. Some years later she returned to Arvada where she continued her teaching career as an elementary-school teacher for the Arvada Public School. In 1939, she married Richard Hughes but never had any children.
