My Uncle Billy during the 2nd World War

1942 , Hayward CA

I was born in 1938 and so when Pearl Harbor was bombed, I was only three years old. Soon thereafter my Uncle Billy was drafted into the Navy. At the time, he was living in Colorado with Dorothy, his wife and Lois, his small baby daughter.

Billy Shackley was sent to California for his boot camp at Camp Parks, in what is now Dublin CA, which was a short distance from Hayward, where we were living at the time. What is left of Camp Parks is very near the Dublin/Pleasanton BART train station.

During the war many things were hard to get and amount those things were candy. Since I was very young at the time, I don't remember how often he would come and visit with my parents, but each time he would visit he would bring me a Hershey candy bar. At the time, the bars could be broken up into small rectangles. Because candy was so hard to get at the time, I learned that if I would eat only one rectangle at a time, I could make the bar last until his next visit. And therefore even three and four year olds had their form of rationing.

After getting out of the service, I remember that Billy built the home, that there lived in the rest of there lives at 5610 Brentwood St, Arvada CO

To the best of my knowledge Billy was not a nick name and he had no middle name.
