Joseph H. Pauly, 63, lifelong resident of Purcell, died Monday afternoon, August 1, 1938, in the University of Kansas hospital at Rosedale, from pneumonia. He was a prominent stockman and grain man at Purcell, but had been in failing health in recent years.
Joseph, son of John and Anna Pauly, Purcell pioneers, was born November 9, 1874 in that community. He married Miss Christina Alfers, May 28, 1899. She preceeded him in death in 1927.
They were parents of 12 children, 8 of whom survive their father, including: three daughters, Mrs. Mary Donahue, Chicago; Miss Aurelia Pauly, Kansas City; Miss Edith Pauly of the home; and five sons, Eugene Pauly, Easton; A. F. Edward, J. A. and Bernard, all of the home. A sister, Mrs Martha Sommer, Atchison; and one brother, B. M. Pauly, also mourn his loss.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Purcell. Body bearers were C. A. Gormley, M. A. Brazzel, R. A. Whalen, P. K. Devereux, J. L. Gronniger, and Frank Lednicky. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery there.
