His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Life Fellowship, 9754 East 1400 North Road, Bloomington. The Rev. Ken N. Martin will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Private inurnment will be at a later date at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Cremation services are provided by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.
Gene was born Jan. 18, 1930, in Saybrook, the son of Irvin and Ruth Brown Van Note. He married LaVerne Scott on July 1, 1949, in LeRoy.
Surviving are three children, Judy (Bob Tomlison) Brining, El Paso; Linda (Dan) Casey, Wolfforth, Texas; and Garin (Teresa) Van Note, Danvers; six grandchildren, Toni Lynn Karr, Kathie Hudgeons, Kristie and Jared Johnson, Drew (Krista) Van Note and Kaitlin Van Note; eight great-grandchildren, Eryn, Amber and Ashley Brining; Trevor and Jack Karr; Lexy and Zane Hudgeons and Hadleigh Van Note; two brothers, Roger Van Note and Robert Van Note, both of Bloomington; and special friends, Sheila Brandt, Bloomington, and Ron Vance, Colfax.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, David; one sister, Janis Montgomery; and one grandson, Chuckie Brining.
Gene was an Air Force veteran who loved to travel. Gene was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
