Velva was a daughter of William Franklin Smith and Josephine (Josie) Mae (Suiter) Smith. She fell and broke her hip while at Hilltop Rest home in Science Hill, Ky. on Sept. 15, 2003, where she had been a resident since Oct. 6 2002.

Her first marriage was to Hayden Ginter on November 25, 1935 in Montgomery County, Ky. Hayden served in World War II, as did her brother, Melvin. After moving to Dayton, Ohio, Velwa was a dedicated employee of Delco Moraine, retiring after 30 years as parts manager. She received a gold watch and her picture in the Dayton Daily News.

She married David Pennington July 25, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio. They moved to Daytona Beach, Florida for 2 years after retirement, then to Cookville, Tennessee, and settled in Somerset, Ky.

She was preceded in death by by her parents; brothers: Arnold, Corbett, Earl, and Melvin; sisters; Beulah Heindl Coleman,and Bethel Spencer.

She is survived by her husband, David and a sister, Versie Burnside of Trotwood, Ohio.

Although she didn't have children of her own, she had many nieces and nephews who loved and adored her. She will be missed.

Viewing was held 11 a.m. until time of service at 1:30 p.m. on Friday October 24, 2003 at Lange and New Brothers Family Funeral Home with interment immediately following.
