Son of William (Bill) Franklin Smith and Josephine Mae (Suiter) Smith; grandson of John J. Smith and Elizabeth Fields Keith Smith. Arnold shares a tombstone with his father, with whom he lived on a farm on U.S. #35 east of New Lebanon.
They moved to New Lebanon in 1943-44 from their farm near Frenchburg, Ky., to be near family in Dayton. He walked everywhere he needed to go as he had epilepsy and neither he nor grandpa drove. He was struck and killed by a motorist near Wampler's on U.S.#35, on his way home from buying cigarettes. He farmed all his life.
