JAMES JASPER GARNER, son of old Foushee & Mary Garner was born in Va. in Northunberland, County in 1809.

James married 1st, Lucinda Adams on March 6, 1828 in Ray County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Pleasant ADAMS & Ruth SUTHERLAND. Lucinda died on their farm in Andrew County, Mo. in 1847. She was the mother of nine children, one of whom was Louisa's father, young Foushee.

James married 2nd, Rebecca Adams, the younger sister of his first wife. They were married July 27, 1848 in Andrew County. Rebecca was born about 1820 and was first married to Dr. Johnson, this about 1837. To this union one child was born, James W. Johnson, born in 1838. Dr. Johnson went out on a call one night and was killed by bushwackers. Rebecca married secondly her childhood sweetheart, Henry English and to this union 3 children were born, Sarah Jane English, 1841; Charles Henry Archabald English, 1844 and Lucinda English, 1846. Mr. English went off to fight in the Mexican War and was killed. She was alone and James was lonely so he suggested they get married. To this union four daughters were born.

James died in the winter of 1860-61 of typhoid fever and is buried at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Andrew Co. He had decided to either build a new house across the road or move to Texas but died before doing either. Grandchildren of James said that he was going to Texas with his brother. (This might have been Neri since Neri moved out of Missouri and into Kansas, he no longer felt safe in Missouri, he being a Union man. It is possible that they had planned to go to Texas at one time.)

James and Lucinda were married March 6, 1828, five years before the parents of James were separated. After his brother, Neri was released from his bondage he took his mother, sister (Mary Ann) and brother, (Jeremiah) to the Platte Purchase to settle west of the Nodaway River. James and Lucinda following, stopping at St. Joseph for a brief time. They settled on the east side of the Nodaway (in Andrew County) and in time, Neri and his wife, Rachel relocated near them in the same county. Their mother lived with Neri and about 1851 their father wandered into the same county and he lived with James and (his second wife) Rebecca until his death, about 1863.

After Lucinda died, Rebecca was living on an island near Savannah with her children. James was a widower and lonesome and he said that they might keep each other company so they were married. Rebecca died Oct.24, 1892 in Andrew County and was buried at Mt. Carmel.

After James died Archie English (Rebecca's son) got the minor children of James and Rebecca to sign away their rights (not knowing what they were doing) and he bought the timber land belonging to his step father. Also, the minor children were forced to work in the fields not knowing that their father had left plenty for them.

Rebecca trusted that the girls would find husbands to take care of them and that the boys by her second marriage must get a start in life, so she gave James Garner's money to her two boys. This caused a lot of hard feelings in the family for many years.

When James died it was so cold and snowy that they could not go to the cemetery with him so he was buried in a field on the old Martin farm. They took his body out on a shed between two feather beds.
