Abbott Marvin Hunter, 76, of 509 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Albemarle Hospital. Born on March 26, 1933 in Perquimans County, Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his parents, Abbott Shepard Hunter and Lillie Harrell Hunter; his youngest son, Gary Preston Hunter; a sister, Elizabeth H. Roberson; and three brothers, Edward Hunter, Ray Hunter and Jimmy Hunter. Mr. Hunter retired after 25 years as Clerk for the Town of Hertford, worked part-time for Hertford Hardware Co., served as town commissioner for 4 years, was a member of Hertford Baptist Church, the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department for many years and the Bear Swamp Hunt Club where he was a past president. As a baseball coach he was instrumental in the lives of many of the Albemarle area youth having coached in American Legion, Babe Ruth and backyard ball. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Naomi Riddick Hunter; a daughter, Joan Hunter Rountree of Kitty Hawk; a son and his wife, Abbott Marvin Hunter, Jr. and Helen of Hertford; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Hunter of Manteo; eight grandchildren, Travis Riddick and wife, Stephanie, Casey Riddick, Megan Pippins and husband, J.P., Paul Rountree, Wayne Hunter, Ryan Hunter, John Hunter and Holly Hunter; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Pippins, Brayden Pippins and Savannah Riddick; two sisters, Marie Leary of Hertford and Lillie Ambrose of Elizabeth City and a brother, W.G. "Pete" Hunter of Hertford. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Hertford Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery with Honors being accorded by the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent in memory of Gary Hunter and Marvin Hunter to the Jim "Catfish" Hunter ALS Foundation, P.O. Box 47, Hertford, NC 27944 or the American Cancer Society , Perquimans County Chapter, P.O. Box 156, Hertford, NC 27944. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the Hunter family.
