Wayland Gene "Pete" Hunter, 75, of Hertford, NC, died Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

Mr. Hunter was born in Perquimans County on June 7, 1942, and was the son of the late Abbott S. and Lillie Mae Harrell Hunter.

A graduate of both Chowan College and East Carolina University, he retired from Perquimans County High School where he had taught for over 25 years.

An avid sports fan, through the years he had coached baseball and basketball and had served as an umpire for Little League Baseball. In 1993 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame at Chowan College. A member of Hertford United Methodist Church, he also enjoyed membership in Bear Swamp Hunting Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Sumner Hunter, a daughter, Rene Hunter Kuzniar, a sister, Elizabeth Roberson, and by brothers, Marvin, Ray, Edward, and Jimmy Hunter.

Surviving are his daughter, Jacqueline Hunter Harbeson of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Marie Leary and Lillie Ambrose, both of Elizabeth City; five grandchildren, Hunter and Jackson Harbeson, and Sumner, Riley, and Haden Cox; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Hertford United Methodist Church, and will be officiated by his pastor, The Rev. Bryan Sexton. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church social hall the hour prior to services on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made either to the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, earmarked Hunter/Baseball, PO Box 337, Hertford, NC 27944 or to the SPCA of Northeastern NC, 102 Enterprise Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to his caregivers, Linda Chappell, Barbara Tetterton, and Jackie Joyner, who provided devoted, loving care for their loved one.
