UNDER HILL RESIDENT DIES EARLY SUNDAY
UNDERHILL, Wis. –William Dirks Sr., 86, died early Sunday morning at his farm home near Underhill. Born July 3, 1864, in Richnow, Germany, he came to this country with his wife and two children at the age of 28.
Only a week after arriving here his daughter died, and other misfortunes came to the family during the early years of their residence here. The deceased was employed at the Estes sawmill in Cecil, and later worked on the Nabor farm near Cecil.
The Dirks bought land near Berry Lake from the late W. C. Zachnow and built a log cabin there. About 25 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Dirks retired and turned the farm over to their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ditman. Both families continued living on the homestead.
On Nov. 24, 1949, the couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Mr. Dirks had been in good health until about four weeks ago.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Charles, Michigan City, Ind., William Jr. of Mayville, Paul of Theresa, Henry of Zachow and Theodore of Edgar; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Emma) Breslow and Mrs. Martha Neitzel, Mayville, Mrs. William (Ella) Kroening, Krakow, and Mrs. Charles (Ottilia) Dittman of Underhill; 43 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
The body is at the Kuehl funeral home in Gillett and will be remove to the Christus Lutheran Church in Underhill at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be held there at 2.
