His father James was brought over from Ireland by the British Army in 1836 to fight in the Upper Canada Rebellion. The soldiers were each given 100 acres in return for their service and most decided to remain in Canada.

James was a bit of a wanderlust. After his siblings joined him about 1847 he sold his land in Spencerville, Ontario, to them and moved his own family to Illinois and on to Nebraska where John met and married Ruth Ann Conger.

John and Ruth moved from Kansas to South Dakota, then in 1902 north to Alberta when the Canadian government offered land in return for settling the wilderness.

Their daughter Nellie wrote that the Emigration Train from South Dakota to Canada was packed - even the animals were in the 52 boxcars, with 9 coaches for the passengers.

But by 1910 the family was back in the States, farming in Oregon.

Additional children include:

Mary Carmichael 1875 – 1888
