James was born in Lislea, County Derry, to weaver/farmer Daniel Carmichael and his wife Nancy Murdock, the seventh of about eight children all baptised in the Kilrea Church of Ireland (Anglican).

James was recruited by the British Army in 1836 to fight in the Upper Canada Rebellion against Americans who were trying to take over parts of Canada. At the close he was granted about 100 acres in Spencerville, Ontario, in return for his service.

As recorded in the Prescott Land Office between 1846-1900 he eventually sold off acreage to family members.

In 1845 James married Martha Dempsey from County Antrim. Her younger brothers were baptised at First Kilrea Presbyterian in County Derry where James' sister Jane was married. So perhaps the families knew each other in Ireland.

After the death of their father Daniel in 1847, James was joined in Spencerville by his older brother John and his family. In 1860 their sister Mary Ann and her husband Richard Anderson immigrated as well.

Their youngest brother Samuel died fighting the Crimean War in Turkey in 1854.

About 1866 James and Martha moved to the States where he continued to farm. Their 10th child and youngest son was born in Illinois in 1870 and the family then moved on to Nebraska before settling in Ridgway, Colorado.

Additional children include:
Edward Carmichael 1852 – 1912
