His nine older siblings were all born in Ontario. His father was the first of his line of Carmichaels to emigrate from Lislea, County Derry (just 35 miles due east of Derry City). James was recruited by the British Army in 1837 to fight in the Upper Canada Rebellion.
Just before Frank's birth the family moved to the States, living in Illinois, Nebraska and Colorado where he and his brother Robert worked in the mines.
Frank became a doctor as did five of his cousins, a son and a grandson. Frank himself reached the position of Clinical Director for the State Psychiatric Hospital.
He served in WWI, married Rosemary McCloskey and raised their family in Kansas City, Missouri.
