Bertha Rebecca was the fifth child born to Addison P. Walden and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Stewart Walden. AP and Mary lived adjacent to the Little Walnut River, near the Bois d'Arc community. We do not know Bertha Rebecca's exact name. She is enumerated on only two census records. On one, she is Bertha; on the other, she is Rebecca. We do not know if one was just a nickname for the other, or whether she was "Bertha Rebecca," or "Rebecca Bertha." We have no other documentation for her, other than the two census records. We have chosen to call her "Bertha Rebecca," reflecting the order of the census records. We note that later in life, her older sister Lena Walden named one of her daughters Bertha - perhaps an indication that this child went by Bertha, rather than Rebecca.

Bertha Rebecca is enumerated as Bertha, and listed as daughter in the home of Addison and Mary Walden on the 1880 census. She was 5 years old. She is enumerated as Rebecca and listed in the home of AP and Mary Walden on the 1885 Kansas census. Rebecca was 9 years old, and attending school.

We have been unable to find Bertha Rebecca after the 1885 census. We believe the article below is actually reporting on Addison Walden's family. Addison's wife, Mary, died in December of 1885, a month before this article. We have also been unable to find Bertha's brother, Samuel, after 1885. We suspect the article is referring to Bertha as the daughter who just died, and referring to Sameul him when it reports that another child was near death.

Another death has occurred in the family of Mr. Waldron [sic], living across little Walnut. This time one of his daughters, and another one still lying at the point of death. Mr. Waldron is left with a large family to care for. We deeply sympathize with him and his in their grief.

There is no stone for Bertha. We believe she is buried in an unmarked grave in the Walden lot, to the left of the large Walden marker, next to Florence Walden.
