Lena was the eldest of eight children born to AP and Mary Elizabeth Stewart Walden.

Lena's paternal grandparents are Willis Walden and Rebecca Douglass Walden. Her maternal grandparents are George Stewart and his wife Talitha Potts Stewart.

Lena likely was born in Boyle County, Kentucky, as that is where her parents were living at the time of her birth. It also appears Lena spent the first four years of her life in Boyle County. Her father, AP Walden, purchased land in Boyle County in February of 1867, just eight months prior to Lena's birth. AP owned this land until 1872. Additionally, AP is listed on the 1868, 1869, 1870, and 1871 tax rolls for Boyle County. We believe AP's land was south of Perryville, near Highway 34, just west of Mitchellsburg.

In January of 1872, when Lena was just over four years old, her father sold his land in Boyle County and moved the family to Butler County, Kansas, arriving sometime in early 1872. The family settled in Bloomington township, on the banks of the Little Walnut River, near what would become the the community of Bodarc. The family remained here for the next fifteen years.

Lena's mother died in December of 1885. Approximately two years later, the family moved to Ulysses, Grant County, Kansas. Lena worked as a Harvey Girl; and later worked at the Hotel Edwards, located in Ulysses.

Lena married Edward Skadden on Christmas Eve, 1888, in the parlor of the Hotel Edwards. Edward, originally from Mason City, Illinois, was in Kansas constructing buildings along the expanding railroad lines. Two days after marrying, Lena and Edward left Ulysses for Mason City. There they remained until 1904, when Edward accepted the position of Superintendent of Construction for the C & E. I. Railroad and the family moved to Danville, where Edward and Lena remained for the rest of their lives.

Edward was a contractor, who designed and built many homes in north Danville. He also supervised construction of the C & EI Train Station in Danville. Lena was an avid quilter and a midwife. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star. Lena and Edward were the parents of seven children: Harvey Frank Skadden; Ella May Skadden McAnaly; Harry Wayne Skadden; Anson Carr Skadden; W. Wallace Skadden; Bertha Skadden Stevens; and Helen Louise Skadden Stalker.
