Mary Elizabeth was the eldest of two children born to George Stewart, Jr., and his wife, Talitha Potts Stewart. At the time of her birth the Stewart and Potts families lived in the Perryville area, in either Mercer or Boyle County.

Mary's parents both died before Mary was ten years old. She and her brother Samuel were raised in the Perryville area by their grandmother Delphia Stewart, their uncle James Allen Stewart, and their aunt Sarah E. Stewart Guthrie and her husband Richard H. Guthrie.
