At the time of his death, Joseph had been in the retail jewelry business for 47 years. Joseph succeeded his father, Jacob A. in the family business, first on Howard Street, opposite the old Stewart's buidling and later moved to Eutaw St. He had been the last surviving brother of Rev. Jacob A. Walter.

Joseph was a well known choir singer and for more than twenty years was tenor at St. Ignatius Church. He was present when the statue of Washington was lifted into position on the monument at Mt. Vernon place. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Seminary prior to it becoming a seminary. Cardinal Gibbons was a close friend and often visited. He and his wife Emily produced 14 children. He passed away from pneumonia.
