Francis was the oldest child of John Jacob A. Walter and Mary Deagle of Baltimore, Maryland. He was a noted musician. His first wife was Esther Jane Ely who unfortunately passed in 1837. They were married at the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore, Md. by the Rev. Nicholas Kearney of July 17, 1834. On September 15, 1854, he remarried at. St. Patrick's Church in Baltimore to Frederica L. Owens. He and his wife later relocated to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was one of eleven children.
