HOBSON – Near Berryessa, Cal., February 15, 1916, David Hobson, beloved father of Anna C., Phillip, David W., Alfred, Edna, Benjamin F., and Celesta Hobson and Mrs. Ella Van Horn, a native of Noth Carolina, aged 93 years, 11 months and 25 days.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral today (Thursday), February 17, 1916, at 2 o'clock from Berryessa M. E. Church. Interment Oak Hill.

David Hobson is Called by Death Near Berryessa
David Hobson, who passed away at his home near Berryessa last Tuesday, was one of the first and most highly respected pioneers of the east side.
Had he lived until next Sunday, February 20, he would have reached his 94th birthday. He came to California from North Carolina in 1850. After engaging in mining in Tuolume county for about two years, he came to Santa Clara valley, in 1852, and purchased about 200 acres of land near Berryessa. While many others became discouraged and gave up or sold out, David Hobson held on and built up one of the finest and most valuable ranches in Santa Clara valley.
He planted the first orchard and marketed the first fruit in the Berryessa district. In his orchard, perhaps, were grown the first apricots in California.
He was intimately identified with the pioneer interests and took an active part in the legasl battle with the land grant.
Although he never held an office, he was active in political affairs and was a staunch Republican. He also gave time and money without stint to educational and religious interests.
With his brother, Jessie Hobson, he purchased the lot and built the Friends church of San Jose, which was one of the first churches erected, and is now (…end of article as printed)
