Who of Santa Clara county does not know and has not admired and esteemed that honest, industrious and brave little man, Jesse Hobson. And who will not be shocked to hear of his sudden death. He died at his residence on Ninth street, Thursday morning, after an illness of only two days, of pneumonia fever. His nephew, Jacob Hobson, was with him through the night and until about 5 o'clock in the morning, when, noticing that he was sinking, he went to call assistance. Upon his return, Jesse was dead. Thus ended a useful and gentle life. Jesse Hobson was born in North Carolina in the year 1825. At an early day he removed to San Jose, where he has ever since resided, acquiring by his industry a competency for his family. He was a member of the Society of Friends, and erected upon his property on Ninth street a house of worship for that Society. An earnest advocate of temperance, of late years he had given much of his time to that cause, lecturing wherever he could obtain a hearing, and finally establishing a little monthly periodical, The Christian Ballot, for the dissemination of his views. Jesse was a true friend of humanity, and the uncompromising opponent of wrong and oppression of every kind. Peace to his ashes. [San Jose Daily Mercury, Friday Morning, April 11, 1879]
Jesse was a teacher in the New Garden Boarding, school, and was a member of the Sons of Temperance which began in San Jose in August 1861. Jesse and brother David donated eighty square feet of land at Ninth and St. John streets in 1867 for the building of a Friends church. Jesse also edited a monthly paper titled "The Christians Ballot."
Note: Jesse was born in Booneville, Yadkin County, North Carolina.
