Hilchey, Stephen F.

BENNINGTON -- Stephen F. Hilchey, 81, a resident of North Branch Street, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Born in Bennington March 1, 1923, he was the son of the late Walter and Freda (Baker) Hilchey. He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Steve worked in the engineering department at Mack Molding Company in Arlington for 33 years prior to his retirement in 1981. During that time, he also worked part-time at Reynolds Tool & Dye in North Hoosick, N.Y.

Steve married the former Irene Plante at the First United Methodist Church in Bennington on Nov. 5, 1944, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In his free time, he enjoyed working with computers and had written many of his own computer programs.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Hilchey; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen E. and Helen Hilchey, a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and James M. Pleasant, all of Bennington; three grandchildren, Lori Pleasant and her fiancé, John Morrissey, Michael Hilchey and Stephanie Hurley and her husband Michael; three great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Shirley Hilchey of Bennington; a sister-in-law, Monica Russo and her husband Al of Pittsfield, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Steve was predeceased by a brother, Walter Hilchey, and by two step-sisters and a step-brother, Adelaide Frasier, Evelyn Welch and Ronald Morse.

At Steve's request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside committal service will take place at the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery in the spring. Contributions in Stephen F. Hilchey's memory may be made to Bennington Area Home Health Hospice through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
