Walter E. Hilchey
Walter Ernest Hilchey, 78, one of the early moving van operators and heavy truckers in this area, died Monday at his home on Safford Street. He had been ill at intervals during the past several years.
Born Jan 30, 1877, in Pope's Harbor, Nova Scotia, he was the son of Stephen and Ann Harris Hilchey. His schooling had been received there. When he was around 18 years old, the family came to the states and he first lived in Gardner, Mass. The major part of his life, however, had been spent in Bennington.
During his active days, he had operated many heavy and light trucks as well as moving vans. Hilchey and Carey were among the first in Bennington to operate these vehicles and had traveled extensively.
Survivors are his wife, Freda B. Morse; three sons, Walter Hilchey Jr., Stephen and Robert Hilchey of Bennington; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Richard (Adelaide) Fraser and Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) Welch of Bennington; one stepson, Roger Morse of Williamstown; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, John and Stephen Hilchey of Nova Scotia.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 pm from his home. The body will be moved from Walbridge Funeral Home probably today. C. Lawrence Broadhurst, pastor of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church will officiate.
