Lucy was the second of eight children born to Richard "Derrick" Porter and Jane Shepard, both native New Yorkers. Lucy's parents and siblings were farmers.

Around 1880 Lucy moved from New York to California where her brother Adelbert was working as a farm hand for their Uncle James Porter. In 1882 at the age of 29 in Dixon, California, Lucy married 40 year old attorney George Washington Knox.

They moved to Los Angeles where George served as Assistant District Attorney in 1885-6. He was elected Assemblyman from LA for a 2-year term in the 1887-89 legislative session.

In November 1885 Lucy and George had a baby boy, George Harold Knox. George Harold became an auto expert and died in Tacoma, Washington in 1911 at the age of 26 following a car accident.

Lucy's husband died in 1912 and Lucy died more than 20 years after George. She was cremated and buried at Inglewood Cemetery in Los Angeles. Her husband, her son, and her sister Julia Porter Clark, are also buried there. Lucy's name is not engraved on the urn.
