Fifteen years after the move to Ossian, Richard "Derrick" Porter and his twin sister Catherine were born. Derrick Porter lived in Livingston County his entire life. Like his father, Derrick was a farmer. He married Jane Shepard in 1850. Derrick was a fraternal twin and two of his sons were identical twins, Albert and Adelbert. In all, Jane and Derrick Porter had 8 children. As young adults almost all of them moved to the west coast. Jane joined her adult children in Oregon shortly after Derrick's death in 1887. Derrick died in his home after struggling for a week with pneumonia.
Records show Derrick owed a lot (D-81) at Oakwood Cemetery, but there is no stone there. In the 1920s the "2 center" plots in that lot were put on sale for unpaid taxes. So at least two plots on either side of the "2 center" plots had been "used." It is believed Derrick was buried in one the of the plots with no marker although there is no documentation to prove that.
