Jennie was the daughter of Derrick Porter and Jane Shepard. she was born in New York. there she married Milon Vangilder in 1884. In 1889 the moved to Sherman County, Oregon where Jennie's brother, Adelbert had lived for several years.

Milon built the United Brethern Church of the Locust Grove area of Sherman county in 1895. In 1900 it was affiliated with Methodiat church and used until 1914.

Milon & Jennie were farmers. They had 7 children: Inez, Florence, Harry, Vernon, Bryan, Darwin and an Infant that died in 1909.
