Adelbert, more commonly known as Dell, was an identical twin to Albert Porter. Dell was one of 8 children born to Richard "Derrick" and Jane between 1851 and 1868. He was raised on his parents' farm in Livingston County near the towns of Nunda and Mount Morris in western New York.

Dell married Harriet Anne "Hattie" Proctor on 12-25-1875 in Livonia Center, New York. Shortly after that, they moved to California to live with his Uncle James Porter in Solano County. Their son George Matthew was born in 1879 and Albert "Bert" Richard was born in 1881.

Uncle James' family started a freight business from the Sacramento Valley to the Columbia River near Biggs. Adelbert and his cousin James "Jim" Richard Porter operated it. Apparently it was short lived, probably due to the advent of the railroad. The outcome, though, was that both cousins took up homesteads in Oregon. Jim moved to Umatilla and Dell moved to Sherman County Oregon in 1882. Dell took his wife and two sons by boat up the Sacramento River to San Francisco then boarded a freighter to Portland, then they took a barge up the Columbia to The Dalles where his cousin met them and took them to Sherman County. Dell left his family there, turned around, made the trip back to California, and helped is Uncle bring in the fall wheat for extra money before heading back to his new home in Oregon.

Adelbert was a capable farmer. In 1885 he took title to his homestead land in Oregon. At that time he owned 160 acres of land for stock and orchards (200 trees). By 1905 Dell owned one thousand and sixty acres, all joining. He has a fine orchard of two hundred trees, and was raising stock for his own use, having several graded Clyde and Percheron draft horses.

In May 1889 their youngest son, Laverne Emmett, was born in Wasco, Sherman County. The 1900 census indicated Dell and Hattie had 4 children with 3 living so it is probable that the child who died was born in the 8 year gap between Albert and Laverne's births or in the 4 year gap between their marriage and George's birth.

Adelbert was a member of Aurora Lodge, # 54, Knights of Pythias. This fraternal organization was founded in 1864 to advance temperance and no gambling. At one time Adelbert was a Republican and had frequently served as delegate to local or state Republican conventions. He later became a Prohibitionist and had been elected delegate to county conventions.

Between 1905 and 1910 Adelbert and Harriett 'Hattie' moved to the Portland area. On July 4th, 1918 Adelbert died of pneumonia. His granddaughter, Dorothy said, "Grandpa Porter went to visit his twin brother near Klondike (Sherman County) in late June 1918. He became ill and died while there. They put his body on the train to Portland that carried soldiers going to fight in World War I. We went to Grandpa's funeral in a horse and buggy. He was buried at Mr Calvary Cemetery in Portland.
