KIN OF DONNER TRAVELER DIES
BERKELEY, July 22. - Mrs. Minnie Foster Markle, 82, whose mother was a member of the Donner party, died last night (July 21, 1937) at Alta Bates Hospital.
Mrs. Markle, widow of Bruce Markle, Mendocino County pioneer, was brought to California from Minnesota at the age of five by her mother, Mrs. William Foster. Six years previous, Mrs. Foster was one of those rescued that fatal Winter at Donner Lake when most of the party perished from hunger and cold. Another child, a 1-year-old boy, died that Winter and was buried near the shores of the lake.
After the rescue, Mrs. Foster lived for a short time in California and then returned to Minnesota where Mrs. Markle was born. The return trip to California was made via the Isthmus of Panama.
The family lived in San Francisco until the fire of 1906 and since then Mrs. Markle has resided in Berkeley. Her home was at 2014 Rose Street.
She is survived by three sons and a daughter, Bruce, Harry and Carl Markle, and Mrs. Warren Richardson.
Services will be held at 11:30 a. m. tomorrow at the Little Chapel of the Flowers, following which the body will be shipped to Fort Bragg for interment in the family plot.
