Harriet Foster's parents, William McFadden Foster and Sarah Ann Charlotte Murphy Foster survived the infamous Donner Party disaster in 1847. They remained in California for a few years and then relocated to Carver County, Minnesota, where William Foster attempted to establish a new community named "San Francisco." He was briefly appointed commissioner of the new county. Harriet and her sister, Minnesota Foster Markle, were born there in 1858 and 1855. Upon the failure of the new "San Francisco" the family returned to California. By 1880, Harriet, Minnesota, a sister Georgiana Foster Powell, and a brother William B. Foster, had settled in Mendocino County. The parents lived out their lives in the "real" San Francisco. Harriet's mother's grave is nearby, marked by a very large memorial stone placed there by the Native Sons of the Golden West.
