Daughter of Levinah W. Jackson Murphy and Jeremiah Burns Murphy. Sarah married William McFadden Foster on December 29, 1842 in Clark County, Missouri. Mr. Foster also survived the terrible winter, but their infant son, Jeremiah George Foster, perished in the tragedy at Donner Lake along with her mother and two brothers.
Sarah and William later had six more children: Alice E. Foster, Georgiana C. Foster, William Budd Foster, Minnesota "Minnie" Foster Markle, Harriet "Hattie" Foster and Frances S. Foster.
Two sisters and two brothers also survived: Meriam Marjory "Mary" Murphy, William Green Murphy, Simon Peter Murphy and Harriet Frances Murphy Pike Nye.
