DEATH SUMMONS COUNTY'S 1961 MOTHER OF THE YEAR, MRS. ALICE MULCAHEY
One of the beloved residents of the rural Janesville community, Mrs. Alice Mulcahey, was called by death when stricken with a fatal heart attack at the farm home of her son Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mulcahey early Monday morning, April 21.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, April 24 at the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville with Father W. D. Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Michael Mulcahey, Jerry Mulcahey, Patrick Maxwell, James Maxwell, Patrick Mulcahey and Gregory Maxwell.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening at the Arnoldt Funeral Home in Janesville. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
The passing of this hardy widowed mother of 8 children whose strength was tempered by grief when he husband died as the result of an accidental gunshot wound in 1932, will be felt by many a friend as well as relatives. The tragedy was sudden and sapped her energy, but her resilient spirit asserted itself. Despite undergoing many hardships and setbacks, she managed to raise her family into fine upright citizens and maintained her cheerful disposition through the years.
It was for this untiring devotion to her children that drew admiration from residents throughout Waseca County and in May 1961, Mrs. Mulcahey was selected "Waseca County's Mother of the Year."
Alice Elizabeth Mulcahey was born to the parents, Henry and Molly Jewison on the farm home in Janesville Township on January 26, 1892. She graduated from the St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester with the class of 1912 and from the Ancher Hospital, St. Paul in the same year. She was a registered nurse, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and of the Church's Rosary Society. She was also a member of the World War I Barracks Auxiliary of Waseca, St. Bernadotte Study Club, Lakeshore Extension Club and Senior Citizen's Club.
In September 1818, she was united in marriage to James Mulcahey of Janesville at Minneapolis. Following their marriage, they resided in Milwaukee, Wis. one and a half years before moving to Janesville where they engaged in farming.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Everette (Marie) Maxwell of Rochester, Sister Germaine (SSDN) of the Sisters of Notre Dame at Mankato, Mrs. Jerry (Peggy) Miller of Waseca, four sons, Robert, Gerald, Bert, all of Janesville and Patrick of Detroit, Michigan, 30 grandchildren, and a brother Frank Jewison Sr. of Janesville.
One son James lost his life by drowning at the age of 15 on June 1, 1939. She was also preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and two sisters.
The Arnoldt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
