William grew up in rural Linn Co., Iowa, the third-born child of Elias and Mary Jane Hopper. Here he married Clara Belle Pickerill on July 2, 1876. Their children were all born in Linn County, residing in Fayette Twp. He occupied himself farming much of his life.

The William Hopper family, along with other Linn Co. reisdents, relocated in Becker Co., Minnesota, about 1897. Here they lived for a few years.

William and Clara filed claims in Independence and Barrett Twps., Near Meadow, Perkins Co., South Dakota, about 1908-1922. Their children, Guy, Bert, and Edith filed adjoining claims.

Early 1920's William and Clara and Guy's family left South Dakota traveling to Oregon first, then to Kelso, Cowlitz Co., Washington, where the they lived the rest of their lives.
