Clara grew up in rural Linn Co., Iowa. Here she married William Jackson Hopper on July 2, 1876. Their children were all born in Linn County, and they all relocated with them to Becker Co., Minnesota, about 1897.

William and Clara filed claims and homesteaded near Meadow in Perkins Co., South Dakota, about 1908, in Independence and Barrett Twps. Their children, Guy, Bert, and Edith filed adjoining claims.

Early 1920's William and Clara and Guy's family left South Dakota traveling to Oregon first, then to Kelso, Washington, where the they lived the rest of their lives.
