Burgess "Bert" Hopper is the second-born son of William J. and Clara Pickerill Hopper. He grew up in rural Linn Co., Iowa, near Palo and Lewis Bottoms.
When Bert was about 18 years old the family relocated to Becker Co., Minnesota. Here he lived for a few years, later to migrate to Perkins Co., South Dakota where he homesteaded in Independence Twp. on land adjoining his parents and siblings Guy and Edith.
October 17, 1912, he married Miss Minnie Hunter at Meadow, Perkins Co., South Dakota. Their son, John William Hopper was born there in November 1915. Bert died very unexpectedly on February 6, 1917. His father was with him at the time of his death, and returned to the family home to tell them the devastating news. Minnie was left a widow expecting a child and with son John only 1 1/2 years old. It was a sad and difficult time for the young family.
Burgess Guy C. Hopper, son of Bert and Minnie was born in May 1917. Minnie raised the boys for a time on the homestead, then moved to Oregon where her parents had relocated. Eventually she remarried.
