"Celebrating Golden Wedding Near Palo
Palo, March 17 Mr and Mrs. James Hopper 73and 68years old, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary March 10 at their farm six miles north of Palo by entertaing more than two hundred relatives and friends during the day. Dinner and supper companies numbered more than a hundred at each meal.
The Hoppers were married fifty years ago by the late Justice Samuel Mc Clintock and were attended by the brides parents, Mr and Mrs. Alexander Lint , her brothers and sisters and a brother of the bridegroom. Alexander Hopper, who came from South Dakota to attend the anniversary party.
Mrs Hopper's mother is 90 years old and was not able to attend.
Mr and Mrs Hopper have eight children. Wm. Hopper, Mrs Chester Adair, Mrs Chas. Bemer and Edward Hopper , all of Palo; Clarence Hopper of Mt. Auburn, Mrs George Greenwood of Shellsburg, Iowa, Mrs Vernon Frasher and Mrs Willis Frasher, of Coggon. All were present at the golden wedding except the son Clarence. The family included 22 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Following their marriage Mr and Mrs. Hopper, both natives of Linn County, lived for 21 years in a log cabin a mile and a half from their present home. Both enjoy good health and operate their 300 acre farm in Lewis Bottom.
Mrs Hopper baked her own wedding cake fifty years ago and provided a similar delicacy for her golden anniversary. On both occasions she secured colored candies for decorating the cake at the same store in Shellsburg.

James wife Lovilla Mahala Lint Hopper

Married Mr. and Mrs. James Hopper Celebrate 50th Anniversary as published in a newspaper on March 13, 1930. Very short obituaries of James Henry Hopper, his wife Mrs. Lovilla Mahala Hopper, their daughter Mrs. Phoebe Belle Frasher, and Willis Allen Frasher, I also have copies taken from a notebook at the Linn County Genealogy Library, which is inscriptions taken from tombstones. I have pages 2,3, and 4 of the inscriptions read from Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. In older days Pleasant Ridge Cemetery was known as Lewis Bottom Cemetery. At one time a church was located there but has not existed for many years. There were many Lewis families in that area, and I think that is how it became known as Lewis Bottom. I doubt if local people know it as Lewis Bottom. There are seven Hopper names in my cemetery list. William Franklin Hopper's name is not listed but I have a picture I took several years back of the tombstone. William Hopper Co. G24 Ia. Inf. died Sept. 1891, 62Y. 9M. 2D. My date calculator comes up with December 2, 1828 for William's birth.
