Joseph Toman, One of Osceola's oldest and highly respected citizens passed away Mar 3 in the name of Joseph Toman. Linked up with the community's growth in many capacities Mr. Toman has had much to do with the progress of the community. Back in the early days he was instrumental in getting one of the first rural schools started, being the first teacher of what was known as the Kienitz school. He was also a charter member of the Midgley M. E. Church and helped to erect the present structure. He had held the office of justice and highway commissioner in Richmond Township and also was a school officer for many years. Mr. Toman was born in Canada, Oct 12 1840 and was married to Miss Caroline Keller Oct. 11, 1864. He came to Michigan in 1868 settling on the farm where he resided until death. Besides teaching and farming he also engaged in the saw mill business for some time. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Toman, one having died many year ago. The wife and following survive, all the children being present at the funeral: John, Allegan;Mrs. John Marlowe, Reed City; Samuel, Mesick;Joseph, Cadillac; Mrs. Fred Bluhm, Mrs. Ernest Seager, Walter, Jas. T. and Jacob of the Reed City vacinity and Mrs. C. H. Morse, Leroy. Funeral services were held Mar 6 from the late home, the six sons acting as pallbearers. Rev. Cross officiated and burial was in Woodland cemetery.
