Obituary
************************************************************
Stephen Nathaniel Nuckolls, 88, died yesterday (Wednesday) morning, at 4:00, at his home near Galax, after having been seriously ill for only a few days. Although he had been in failing health for some time, he had been remarkably active, considering his age, up until recently.
He was a son of the late Clark Nuckolls and wife, Mrs. Rosa Bourne Hale Nuckolls, and was born August 12, 1858, at the old Nuckolls homestead, a few miles southwest of Galax, and died at the same place, having lived there all his life. He was the youngest, and last, of twelve.
Mr. Nuckolls was a brother of the late Rev Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls, for many years a prominent member of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and author of the book, "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County." The late minister died in 1919, and is buried in the Nuckolls Cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Nuckolls are four daughters, Mrs. Harry Tongren, Chicago, IL; Mrs. Arthur Dobyns, Roanoke; Mrs. Earl Thomas, Colfax, WA; Miss Bertha Nuckolls at home, and four sons, William Swift Nuckolls and Benjamin Winton Nuckolls, Hulette, WY; Hale Nuckolls, also at home, and Earl Nuckolls, Galax. Seventeen grandchildren, one of whom is Glenn Pless, Galax, also survive. Two daughters, Maude (first wife of the late Dr. Asbury Glenn Pless and mother of Glenn Pless, Galax), and Pauline Nuckolls, preceded their father in death.
Mr. Nuckolls' wife, who was the former Miss Leona Mitchell Cornett, daughter of the late Capt. William Cornett and wife, Mrs. Linnie Mitchell Cornett, died on February 6, 1941.
The deceased, a prominent farmer and well-known Grayson County citizen, was a pioneer member of the Methodist Church here, and had been actively engaged in church work throughout the greater portion of his life.
Most impressive funeral services, yet simple, were conducted this (Thursday) afternoon, at 2:00, with the pastor, Rev W Kyle Cregger, in charge. The services were opened with the singing of thehymn, "How Firm a Foundation," after which scripture from the Old Testament was read by Rev C R Melton, Galax. A quartet comprised of Mrs. W C Berry, Miss Judy Taylor, B D Beamer, and J W White, Jr, sang "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross." A scripture reading from the New Testament and a talk by the Rev French Wampler, Bridle Creek, a former pastor of the local church, gave a talk, and the services were concluded with the hymn, "I Will Sing You a Song."
Active pallbearers were: Lance M Todd, G W Todd, Emmon B Todd, Mike Nuckolls, Heath Nuckolls, and Kent Ward.
A large number of honorary pallbearers carried the flowers.
Interment was in the Nuckolls Family Cemetery.
