Melvin Pressley DeFrates, 87, of Springfield died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born Sept. 1, 1919, in Springfield, the son of William and Etta Mae Sanders DeFrates. He married Jean Mowery in 1951.

Mr. DeFrates was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He worked for the Springfield Fire Department and was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, Shriner's, Masonic Lodge 4, Disabled American Veterans and the Retired Firefighters Association.

Survivors: wife, Jean; daughter, Susan (husband, Greg) Nergenah of Chatham; son, Mark DeFrates of Springfield; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brother, Lawrence DeFrates of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services: noon Monday, Camp Butler National Cemetery, the Rev. Brent Mitchell officiating.
